How to Refill a Zippo Lighter: A Step-by-Step Guide

The iconic Zippo lighter is known for its reliability and distinctive design. But even the most dependable tools need occasional maintenance, and refilling is a key part of keeping your Zippo running smoothly. Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to refill your Zippo lighter, complete with images for each step:

What you’ll need:

  • Zippo lighter fluid (or other approved lighter fluid)
  • Paperclip (or similar tool)

Safety first:

  • Always refill your lighter in a well-ventilated area, away from any open flames or heat sources.
  • Do not smoke or light anything while refilling your lighter.
  • Avoid getting lighter fluid on your skin or eyes, as it can be an irritant.

Steps:

  1. Open the lighter and remove the insert: Use your thumb to lift the lid and pull the inner insert out of the metal case.

  2. Lift the felt pad: Locate the felt pad on the bottom of the insert. Use your fingernail, or the paperclip if needed, to gently lift the pad and expose the cotton filling underneath.

  3. Refill the cotton: Slowly pour lighter fluid onto the cotton filling until it’s saturated. Avoid overfilling the insert, as this can cause leakage and make the lighter difficult to light. You’ll know it’s full when the lighter fluid reaches the top of the cotton and starts to change color slightly.

  4. Replace the felt pad: Gently press the felt pad back down onto the cotton filling, ensuring it sits flat and covers the entire area.

  5. Wipe away excess fluid: Use a clean cloth or paper towel to wipe away any lighter fluid that may have spilled on the insert or the metal case.

  6. Insert the refill back into the case: Slide the insert back into the metal case until it clicks into place.

  7. Light and test: Close the lid and try igniting the lighter. If it doesn’t light on the first try, give the wick a few seconds to absorb the fluid and then try again.

Additional tips:

  • It’s a good practice to replace the flint occasionally, especially if you find yourself needing to strike the wheel multiple times to light the lighter.
  • Zippo also offers butane inserts as an alternative to using lighter fluid. If you’re interested in this option, follow the specific instructions provided by Zippo for refilling a butane insert.

By following these simple steps, you can keep your Zippo lighter functioning flawlessly and enjoy its classic design for years to come.
